Its probably a media problem. Most xbox DVD drives wont read Cd-R's. It needs to be CD-RW, or DVD-R/RW. I stream my movies from my PC's CD drive to the xbox using Relax and that works too. You could also FTP the files directly to the xbox harddrive, but if you dont have an upgraded HD itll fill up pretty quick. You should also upgrade to the latest xbmp (v2.4), i find it was far less buggy.

i have an 80GB hard drive on the xbox but it has about 30 games on it i guess i'll be able to send some movies on it.. on which folder should i store them? if i connect a pc dvd-drive on the xbox (as the tutorial says on xbox-scene.com) will i be able to watch movies directly from cd-rs? if i put them on cd-rw discs will i be able to watch them from the existing drive?

By default, xbmp looks for videos in the folder e:/videos (i think- youll have to read the config.xml to be sure). Since f: is your bigger partition, you can edit the config.xml to have xbmp play videos from a folder named f:/videos or f:/movies, whatever you wanna call it. Im sure doing the dvd drive swap would work but that seems like an expensive solution, your call. And re-burning all the avi's to cd-rw seems like a pain too, especially if you have alot of movies.

I thought about all these options too, but for me the easiest and cheapest way was to buy a 2nd NIC ($13CA) and a 20 foot crossover cable (under $10CA). Now i just stream the movies using Relax (great program). And i dont have to d/c from the internet to stream, or even if im FTPing files.
