This little file can nuke your MS Dashboard if your not too careful so in this thread we compose a list of all games that contain the Update.

Which games contain the update file that can Nuke my MS Dashboard If I have EvoX installed?

Whacked!
Splinter Cell
NBA 2K3
NFL Fever 2003

(to be continued.)
XanTium
Unreal Championship
M3_DeL
The file is called update.xbe just thought that might be useful to throw in
Trizcuit
jester.gif I would like to also add the new install disk that was sent to beta testers.
FcukedBox
Toejam And Earl
rooicity
Ghost Recon
dripgoss
Am I correct in thinking if you have Evox2.5 w/ ybox hack, it won't kill your original dash?
Gnome34
Why did this thread die?
I have found this file (update.xbe) also on NFL2K3.
Does it only destroy your dashboard if it isn't the original ms dashboard?

gnome34
nautiazn85
The update is also available on the CD provided with XBLIVE.
MeNaCe911
nfl 2k3
ladyironess
MechAssault has the files: update.xbe
dashupdate.xbe
Are both of these files the ones I should be on the look at for? Or is it just the update.xbe file?
If the culprit file is removed, will the back-up ,then be safe, and will it be playable?
If the original game containing the bad file is played, will it also Nuke the dashboard, or does the nuking only happen with the back-up?
Thanx...
jherre6
So how would one go about ensuring this never happens?

Just delete the update.xbe file?

YUP!

Remove the UPDATE.XBE. There are other files you can remove to protect yourself from this.

Do a search!

However.. simply having these UPDATe files still on your RETAIL GAMES, BACKUP GAMES on DISK, or BACKUPS on the HD will not screw you up!

Only activating the GO LIVE feature, or activating optional DOWNLOAD options like go online and get more MAPS, TEXTURES, etc. will cause you to ruin a standard install of EVOC on the C drive using older method of EVOX install.

These days.. Ideally.. you may want to consider new BIOS options.. like renamed DASHBOARDS, or F BOOT options. Both can help protect you from grief cause by accidental LIVE updates to dashboards.

For more info.. read OTHER FAQ's, and search on topics using the following terms..

LIVE
UPDATE

also read any guides and tutorials about BIOS upgrades., and EVOX installs to F drive!

Please.. no MORE replies to this thread in FAQ!

ok im confused,

so ur saying if i download new content or if a game receives an auto-update, the evox dash will become corrupt? if im not getting this can someone simplify it for me?

Inside Pitch 2003

Burnout2 also

And i did run the dashupdate :-(

Now my original dashboard is one with XB live...... !! and i can't replace it with the original.
If i do i get the error 13.

OK i still can get into Evox, it's not a very big problem.

But does someone have an idea how to put the orignal back.
Or anyone an idea which files are modified when running the dashupdate?

SW: KotOR too...

I gotz nuked... what happens is the original MS Dash is no longer readable and you'll get an 'Error 21' if u try to run it (for CDs DVDs or just regular loading)... If you're not Live, it doesn't really matter... Just load up DVD-X 2 (Dongle Free!) and XBox Media Player.

Now here's my question... Is there a solution or am i permanentaly msxboxdash free?
Lovin It!
kindve a noob here but I would say(it hasnt been said yet),duh,...any XBOX LIVE enabled game could potentially harm your evox install
brsandlin
The game "XIII" has a dash update and update.exe
Haemarroid
Colin McCrae 4 - if you choose to install XBoxLive
shanafan
All Xbox Live games have the dashupdate.xbe executable.

Well guys i don't know why you have problem with dashboard when you do the update. I have never encounter any problem with mine when it does the update. My evox works perfectly and i have all my apps in their folder and nothing has been changed in my ini and the only things i do see in there that is knew are for xbox live and i been enjoying playing my games online to and have downloaded new levels for games that i and like to play crimson skies high road to revenge.

Well guys i don't know why you have problem with dashboard when you do the update. I have never encounter any problem with mine when it does the update.

If you have a mod chip, you won't see any problems. But if you are doing soft mods with fonts or audio hacks, they won't work anymore because the update fixes the flaws they exploit.
spinaroonisucka
OK heres the deal. I will try to simplify this matter. When you turn on your xbox, the ms bios will load the file "xboxdash.xbe" This is the ms dashboard. When you install a mod chip, you have a number of options, the easiest one being - download a bios that has a different boot sequence. (I.E. The Xecuter 2 bios). These bios's will boot the executable (the xboxdash.xbe file) in a different order. Example: My Xecuter 2 bios will boot "evoxdash.xbe" first, then if that is not found it will load up "xboxdash.xbe" Now, on the root of my C drive, I installed Evox. I named the xbe file "evoxdash.xbe" and left the ms one named "xboxdash.xbe" What this does is allow me to turn off my switch and load up the ms bios. If i turn the switch on, my xecutor 2 bios will load up "evoxdash.xbe" becasue that is first in the boot sequence, which is evox. If i turn the switch off, the ms bios will load "xboxdash.xbe" which is the ms dashboard. I am completly safe from the update.xbe file. When you run the update.xbe file it will update your "xboxdash.xbe" file.

Now here is where people will nuke their dash.

1. they install a modchip, or use an exploit or whatever other means to mod their xbox
2. they install their new dash, and it is named "xboxdash.xbe" (their ms-dash might be renamed to "msdash.xbe" or something else
3. they run the update.xbe file, by downloading new maps, content, etc..
4. the update.xbe file overwrites the previous "xboxdash.xbe" file (which is your dash) with a new ms dash
5. they turn on the xbox and the MS dash loads up even with the chip enabled.

Now here is how to fix it.

You are still running your downloaded bios. The update did not affect this at all. You should still be able to run homebrew code (evox, avalaunch, etc..)
1.turn on the xbox
2.insert an evox boot disk ( you should still be running your bios at this point and therefor be able to read the evox disk)
3.ftp to your xbox, rename your ms dash (xboxdash.xbe) file to something else and reupload your dash and name it "xboxdash.xbe"
4.eject the evox disk
5.restart the xbox
you should be fine again at this point

to prevent this from happening agian
1. flash your bios with one that supports a new boot sequence
2. Name your dash to one of the options in the boot order before "xboxdash.xbe"
3. Name your ms-dash back to "xboxdash.xbe"

Sorry for the long post, hope this clarifies the problem for some people
spinaroonisucka
Moral of the story: keep an evox boot disk handy. Splinter cell got me with the dash update once. Then i popped in my evox boot disk and re-uploaded my dash. Then quickly got a bios with a new boot sequence
krypton
Yup, I got nuked by Splinter Cell. I was stupid and tried to download a new map and ended up with an error 21. I used slayer to get my box running again but my m$ dash still doesn't work. It's just the green background with no options when I try to run it. But at least I don't have an error 21 anymore.

what is for example an new bios with new sequence???? and is this hard to switch bios???
derekmasses
ok...i have the problem, where my original msdash wont work, i get the 21 error code, but evox works with no errors. so i cant turn off the modchip or goto my original xboxdash...i think this is what everyoen is talking about... so do i have to fallow the instructions from that one guy who posted??? or do something else?
XDudeX
counterstrike contains the files update.xbe and dashupdate.xbe. I loaded one of these not knowing what it was and an "updating" sign appeared as well as a loading bar. However, my modded box still works fine...?
ralphwiggums
questions that need clearing up.....

what if i re-copy over the entire c partition from a good drive?

does the update modify the kernel in anyway?

( i guess that if it mods the original eeprom, i could always reflash over w/my Xenium backup...)

Damn, Ninja Gaiden just got me. I didn't realise it had an online option, just thought it was another game mode. Now I get error 21 when I try and boot to the normal dash. I have an aladdin advance and use evox with the xecutor 2 bios. Usually to boot to the MS dash I just quickly press the on button and it turned on. Now as I said I get error 21 or the green service screen. I can still use evox if I press and hold on for a second but I want the normal MS dash to work too. It already had the Live menu as it was only made in February this year.

So how do I fix this?

I don't have an evox boot disk but I do have a disk someone sent me that says "slayers 1" on it. Is that any use?

Also, my laptop wont recognise my xbox using the system link cable so I can't ftp to change the files. I tried using FlashFXP and turned my firewall off but still no joy.

Today sucks. uhh.gif

b-gates,

I got the same problem. Had to reinstall C:\ from a backup. Replacing xboxdash.xbe or msxboxdash.xbe does nothing nor does deleting only \xodash.

1. you can download evox from #xbins off IRC and then create a boot disc CD-RW.

2. you have to use a crossover cable if it is a direct connection to you xbox (not conneted through a hub or switch)

3. I hope you have have a backup of C:\

I want to know how to disable xbox live autoupdate. There are some games that auto update when you put in the disc with no say at all. I know you can make a backup and remove the update xbe's but hell I do like using the originals, plus I rent games alot.
b-gates
Cool, thanks for your reply man.

Unfortunately the guy who chipped my xbox didn't back up my C. Said he forgot. However I can get my friend to send me a copy of his on CD. Reckon that would work?

I already have evoX sitting in an email account somewhere so I don't need to look for it. Just d/l the fecker and burn it to CD again.

The other thing I have is SlaYer's Auto installer (says 1 on one disk and 2.8 on the other disk) which both have evoX too. It also has an option to "rebuild retail HD"

Would that fix it for me? I was going to do it but I was worried I'd loose all my game saves so I thought I'd come on here and see whagwan.

hopefully I can get it fixed and working will little trouble and without loosing anything or fuckling anything else up!

Also, once I do get it sorted, can I still go on Live with the chip off and with original games or has this messed it up for that permanently?

I'll go buy a proper crossover cable tonight too.

Any help is appreciated cos I don't know wtf I'm doing!

cheers

spinaroonisucka's little 'clarifying' post really did clarify things. What I don't get is why would your dashboard get nuked in the first place? From what spinaroonisucka said, you can only get it nuked if your dash has the xboxdash.xbe name. Simply do what he said (rename the new dash and leave the ms one the same), and you should be fine. Is this correct or am I missing something here?
b-gates
Cheers dude.

So, does the fact my xbox already had the live menu when I bought it make a difference?

As I said, I have 2 disks (found another 1) that say Slayers 1 and Slayers 2.8 on them and I notice they both have an option to re-install the retail HD. I was going to do it but was unsure if this is the best solution and was worried I'd loose my save games. Unfortunately the person who chipped my xbox never backed up my c drive either.

What is the best and easiest way to fix this? I'd totally hate to loose all my saves but I really want the MS dash back to play DVDs, songs and for use on Live when I get broadband. There's a very slim chance I can get a back up of c but if I can't then I need to know what my alternatives are. Also, can it be fixed without ftp? Where are the save games kept on the xboxes HD anyway?

Thanks in advance! Hope you can help a dumbass out - I'm desperate and can't find anything specific enough on search.

i palyed star wars clone wars, counter-strike, rainbow six three and still no dash problem, of cour I got unleashx but its called evoxdash, xbe
odot
Think I got nuked by NFS U: however I was not online but I guess I got updated somehow. Atleast now I know why I can only load non backups. blink.gif

I just solved the problem on my box.
My problem was simmilar to one reported earlier in this thread: after Ninja Gaiden, I could no longer switch to my msdash, although evox and everything else seemed to work. I have boxplorer installed on my harddisk so I started it from evox. Luckily, I had two files on my x:\ drive, xboxdash.xbe and msxboxdash.xbe which were originally the same, although evox.ini used the latter to load my msdash. This file was probably updated accidentaly, but the other one was fine. Of course, all I had to do was copy xboxdash.xbe to msdxboxash.xbe and it worked.
So, before re-installing everything, why not try to replace this file?!
camaroman33
i am trying to update my ms dash because i think i nuked it. but when i try to update the software with one of those games nothing happens. how can i get the correct files another way??
fish123456
Ninja Gaiden zapped my xbox all to he|| as well. Only thing is, I'm not using a chipped box. I soft-modded mine using the mech assault save game exploit and installed linux. I don't actually get an error when I start mine up, rather, it reboots forever. It begins to display the dashboard (you can make out some of the green circles that fly around when it loads), but then it freezes and reboots.

Since I don't have it modded, I haven't backed up anything on the disk. This is in part b/c I'm a noob. So, without meaning to sound dumb (if it's not too late already), is there a way to restore the C:\ drive w/o a backup from my specific drive, meaning, my friend's drive? If so, does this require that my friend and/or I have a mod-chip installed? I'm guessing it probably does, but I'm constantly surprised at what everyone here is doing to their xboxes.

Thanks in advance!!!
jonny_eh
Without access to your dash or games, or a modchip, the xbox is useless (unless you get a modchip).

A good way to protect yourself from accidentally accessing live is to just unhook the ethernet cable plugged into your xbox. All the games that I have seen grey out the menu item for accessing xbox live (and therefore messing up your system) when the xbox isn't plugged into a network.

I had the opposite problem, I needed the update because I wanted to do a soft 'sploit with a usb memory stick and a usb->xbox keyboard dongle. The thing is, you need the live update in order for the usb memory stick to work.

Hope that helps.
evilocity
My problem is similar, but was not caused (at least I don't think it was from an update.xbe)

I'm having serious trouble with the MS Dash

I have the EvolutionX M7 BIOS and am using the Evox Dash, but I can't access the MS dash from Evox, or if I power up with the chip off.

On C: on the Xbox, I have a 752KB xboxdash.xbe (the default.xbe from the boot disk), and a 1.87MB msxboxdash.xbe (which I renamed per the tutorial I was following). No matter how I set the .ini, or how I name the .xbe files I can't for the life of me get the MS dash to work...

Looking at XBtools, the BIOS should boot evoxdash.xbe first, then xboxdash. I've tried renaming both .xbe files with nearly every combination statistically possible, retransferring the original .xbe from my C: backup on my PC through FlashFXP and have had zero luck.

I've heard that the HDD being unlocked could cause this problem, but it's the factory HDD, which are locked by default if I am not mistaken...

Anyone have any suggestions?

Any help would be appreciated. God knows I never would have made it this far without a ton of help from all the tutorials and forums here

*edit*

I forgot to mention that when I try to jump to the MS dash from evox, depending on how I name the .xbe files, I get the "Your Xbox needs service" screen, sometimes with the 21 and sometimes without. Or, (again, depending on what I have the .xbe files named) it just reloads the evox dash.

sand20042
new bios can load evox before m$dash you don't need to rename original one leve it name xboxdash.xbe just only rename evox (defult.xbe ) to evoxdash.xbe that's all
HateMan
yeah your box wont boot to your m$ dash because its named wrong, rename it as such: xboxdash.xbe, just like it was before you touched it. And thats really it, just rename your evox dashboard to evoxdash.xbe, any of the later bioses will boot dashboards in an order, and the evoxdash.xbe is higher on the list than xboxdash.xbe. Try just renaming it.
malawi
if you do have a toasted ms dashboard.. how do you get it back?
snotmonster
i think the new bios just doesn't work with mods, so it gives error 21 when you try to run it. so even if it didn't download over your evox (which was named msdash or whatever) you would not be able to run it anymore.

apparently slayers has the option to rebuild the retail HD which does include the older dash version which still runs on modded boxes. i haven't tried it but when i get slayers i will just copy the dash file by itself so i don't disturb the rest of my current configuration. no sense in asking for trouble!
