Network Uplink: This is the broadband port that connects to the Internet. Typically this will be on your cable modem or ADSL router.
Network Card: This is a 10 or 100BaseT network connection (either a PCI card or a USB box).
Hub: A hub allows multiple machines to be on the same network as each other.
Switch: A switch is similar to a hub, but is smarter about routing traffic between machines on the network.
NAT Router: Also known as "broadband gateways" or "Cable/DSL routers" these devices allow you to share a single broadband IP address with multiple machines. You may already have one of these if you have multiple computers at home on your broadband connection.
Firewall: This device blocks most network traffic to your machine. Some NAT Switches have a built-in firewall, and software firewalls such as "Zone Alarm" are also popular. You may need to disable your firewall to use the GameSpy Tunnel.
Network Cable: This is a regular RJ45 network cable

Configuration

Hub/Switch Direct to Internet
This is a common configuration if you have a single machine and want to put your Xbox on the same network. If your current Internet connection goes directly from the Network uplink into your network card, this will be the easiest configuration to set up. Just plug the Network Uplink into the Uplink port on the hub, and plug your computer and console into the hub. No networking changes are needed. 4 or 5 port hubs can be purchased for $30-$50.

NAT (DSL/Cable Router)
If you are already sharing your network connection with multiple computers, or plan to in the future, you may need a NAT if you do not have enough IP addresses from your ISP for each computer. You can simply plug your Xbox into the NAT router and it will be on the same network as your computer. No additional configuration is needed. Note that you may need to open (forward) ports on your NAT as outlined above.

Two PC Network Cards
If you do not want to use a hub, you can choose to use two network cards in the same machine. One network card will connect to your Internet connection. The second (console-connected) network card will need to be configured with TCP/IP enabled. You can use an IP address of "192.168.0.1" on it, a Subnet Mask of "255.255.255.0" and leave the gateway and other settings blank. Make sure you configure the GameSpy Tunnel application with the network card that is connected to the Xbox when asked to select one.

NAT + Hub/Switch
If your NAT (Cable/DSL Router) does not have enough ports on it, you may need to plug a hub or switch into it, and then plug your computer and Xbox into the hub. When connecting the NAT to the Hub, you should use the uplink port on one of the devices (but not both).

USB Cable Modem
If you have a cable modem that connects directly to your machine via USB, then you will need a second network card to connect to the game console. See the section above on Two PC Network Cards for more info. Note that if you have a USB Ethernet adapter for use with your Cable/DSL Uplink you can use any of the other configurations since a USB Ethernet adapter is basically just a type network card. An additional card is ONLY needed if your Cable Modem connects directly to your machine via USB (no network cable).

I have a question. I connect to the internet using dialup connection. How would i get the second network card to connect to the internet or did i misinterpret something?

Thanks
Dagoth
If you connect to the internet using a dialup connection you will use an RJ11(modem) - telephone socket to connect to your phone line.

A network connection (RJ45) is slightly bigger. so if you dont already have a network card you will need to install one

I just used a cross over cable from my pc, into an inline coupler, then 40 feet of cat5 into my xbox smile.gif

excuseme but this FAQ should'nt be called
"""How Do I Network My Xbox Console To My Pc?"""

it should be renamed to

How do I Network My XBOX "and" PC

it does not explain how to really network them to share files and the like

just my 2 cents

good FAQ anyway

Or if u have a cable or dsl modem get a MS or linksys wireless g router and a MS wireless g xbox adapter. it will go damn near 9 MB/s or 54 mb/s.

My Xbox is connected in my Wi-Fi WRT54G router.

I'm using this WRT54G for my I-net connection also.

When try 'ng to transfer files to Xbox, it 's kinda slow (2mb/sec).

Is this normal, How can i go make it faster

I was wondering if there was a difference in transfer rate with wireless on xbox. I get about 8-9 with wires depending on the size of the file. Sounds about the same.

Before I had a router I just used the two nics built into my motherboard on pc and ics and it worked fine. I set up the router as an educational experience. lmao. cake to set up but all the different ways to communicate is a bit overwhelming at the time. static, dhcp and the such. Sticking with static till I understand dhcp better. If anyone knows of a good no brainer explanation of the differences in networks site that would be great to see posted here.. beerchug.gif

Just a word on wireless.... dont use it if you're going to be transferring large files.

Typical Cat5 cable is around the 80-90mbps (even tho it says 100 - 100 is only the "theoretical max").

Wireless on the other hand... there's different speeds again.

You have 10mbps, 22, 54, and i think there's also a 76 now too?

anyway.. my friend has a 22. the max he can get is 11mbps. i have a 54 - the max i can get is 19-20. and no, this is not just bad settings. what they say is that "54mbps" is only theoretical - its actually not obtainable - they even admitted that to me in the end. was not impressed

anyway...back to the point. even at 20mbps... are you sure you'd want to wait 15 minutes to transfer something rather than 3? no..i'd say not smile.gif

I have a little problem.
I have 2 network cards in my pc. One of them are for the internet thats i get from a hub that is connected to a wireless internet concection.
The other card is connected with my xbox. I do not want to connect my xbox to the internet so that is clear.

The problem is that when i turn on the xbox and go on the xbox via ftp i loose my internet conection.
It just goes down.
To get my internet working again i have to unplug the crossover that is connected to the xbox.

My internet ip is 10.41.159.3 and the ip for the other network card is 192.168.0.1.
Xbox ip is 192.168.0.3

That is an ethernet jack, for networking the Xbox for System Link play, Xbox Live, or (if you have a modchip) FTP'ing to your computer.

Telephones do not work with Xboxes wink.gif

holy molly, is there another way to FTP to PC without modchip, I thought I only need TSOP Flash or Softmod to copy xbox games to hardrive to play them there, and burn xbox games

Is the XBOX NIC only working in Full Duplex mode. When I try to connect via a USB network adapter (half duplex) the XBOX is not replying. When I put the cable in a 3Comm NIC full duplex, it's working. Forcing this one to half duplex no connection.

Quick question.

I have two PCs. One is sharing internet connection with the other through linksys PNA phoneline cards and an Alcatel 330 USB DSL modem. These phoneline cards only run at 10Mbs and I use the 10/100 network card on my main pc to connect my xbox to. I have been thinking of getting a wireless network with the linksys wireless-G router connected to my main PC with the DSL, a wireless pc card for my other computer and the Linksys Wireless-G adapter for the xbox. My question is does the Wireless-G adapter work on a modded xbox?

helllp!!!!

I am a total noob.
In the first post in this thread about networking.

is that the same type of "networking" if you just wanted to transfer files from pc 2 xbox?

I noticed the words "broadband" alot. I just want to connect my xbox and pc to transfer files and stuff, not to play xbox live. so do i still use that guide?

Ok, what you need is an Xbox Wireless Adapter

Here's the description:

Add your Xbox video game console to your high-speed wireless network with the Xbox Wireless Adapter. Play games on any TV in your home … without wires and with the assurance of the leading wireless security.

You can buy it today Here for $99.00, I know it says $139.00 but when you click on the "Buy It" link, the rates on circuit city and similar places is $99.00.

Or you can shop arround for something cheaper... just check the speed transfer.

Hope it helps. Good Luck! biggrin.gif

I got my wireless adapter from Amazon for $57 shipped. You can get one now for $75.

I haven't done it yet, but I'm sure it will work. Just connect a crossover (the same cable that came with your xbox) cable to a wireless router. Then set up the a wireless connection from your pc to the wireless router. Now they're networked. I would leave the encryption off and just disable ssid broadcast and do mac address filtering. And of course change the default login and password on the xbox just to be sure. This way you have more functionality that the wireless adapter would provide. I'm going to set this up soon, but I want to drill a hole into my wall first, I actually have a more complex setup than you are describing.

- Yes, you dont have to be connected to the net to transfer files. Just use "FlashXP" - a FTP program. A great program actually smile.gif

erm, weird, all i can think of - maybe a wrong setting on the xbox? - cause once the crossover cable is hooked into a network card... it should work

Anyways, can I network my XBOX using this one ethernet card???

for everyone trying to FTP their xbox to their computer in an effort to try to transfer files..... I used flashfxp, connected to my xbox's IP address. I'm using a linksys router and running DHCP.

I attempted to connect to the xbox while the xbox was waiting for a CD. It timed out, and it continually tried. Then i put in the EvoX cd and immediately it connected. Not sure if it helps anyone, but now i have access to my xbox from my computer.
ryfly1805
when i try to ftp my xbox to my pc, i get connected but then get the reply
"This site may not allow file resuming"
that never happened before.. does anyone have any clues??
tailspower2001
To FTP betewn your X-BOX and PC and geting X-BOX Live to work using USB modens an corssover cable must be conteted to both the Computer (OS dosn't matter) and the X-BOX. You need to set-up an FTP Cince on your PC (I use Samrt FTP) to use the FTP option in EvoX and more. To set-up X-BOX Live with your PC you must set-up ICX so you can get on-line.

Wireless giving you actual transfer rates of 54MB or above is BS. You'd be lucky to break the 10MB/sec mark with your card right on top of the access point. If you plan on doing anything besides connecting to the internet, don't do wireless. (this even goes for cards that boast 108MB/sec)

I use dial-up and was wondering how to check to see if I got a network card on my PC. Ive got a place on the back of my computer that is alittle bigger than a phone line. If that means I have one, how would I configure it? I have a HP with Windows 98

Please help an idiot out (me), I'm desperate, my girlfriend isn't speaking to me cause I spend all my time meddling with this damn PC

Before I start asking for help you have my word I have read the tuts. I’ve read the tut by fin1581 but it’s not helping me figure this mess. I’ve installed a network card and am attempting to configure it. I am way out of my depth. When I click on the Network option (windows 98) I receive the following message:

“Your Network is not complete. Do you want to continue.”

If I select yes I am presented with the following list

Configuration tab
MS family logon
Dial-Up Adaptor
FD500, PCI Card/Desktop Network PCI Card (my network card)
MS Virtual Private Network Adaptor
NDISWAN – MS Virtual Private Network Adaptor
TCP/IP – Dial Up Adaptor

Identification tab
Computer name: PBN_Computer
Workgroup: PBN_Workgroup
Computer Description: PBN_User

I just don’t know what to do next do I select my network card and click on add? If yes I am then presented with the following options:

Client
Adapter
Protocol
Service

I don’t know which one to select. Please help, I was well gutted when I came up against this. I just don’t know how to configure this stupid card. Fin1581’s tutorial looked easy but I just don’ know what I’m doing.

Any help will be greatly appreciated. You have my word that I will share any knowledge I learn and assist others in future. It’s what forums are about right? Incidentally I started to just mess around figured the solution might just appear and I managed to loose my internet connection which left my really distraught. I managed to get the connection back my installing the network card. That was sheer luck more than anything. I felt like chucking the card out of the window.

Thanks
TommyMartyn

you can link an xbox directly to the pc by using a crossover cable to connect the xbox to whatever network card in your computer

can you use the standard MS xbox cable that is used to hook 2 xbox's together to hook up your xbox to your pc?

I don't want to come across as unhelpful but the first thing you should have done before posting is go to the tutorials section:

http://www.xbox-scene.com/tutorials.php

Read the guide for noobs, it's an excellent starting point. In answer to your question you do not need a router but you do need a crossover cable/network card. I think people will be more willing to help you out if you've attempted to learn the basics first off. 2 weeks ago I knew nothing, I still haven't managed to connect my X-Box to PC but at least I've gained some knowledge which I'm happy to share biggrin.gif
hawgman
you can link directly to your pc with a crossover cable.
set you ip and gateway Ip the same on your pc

example 192.168.0.1 IP and gateway 192.168.0.1 ( on pc)

then on your xbox

ip 192.168.0.3

gateway 192.168.0.1

then it will work ..

hope that helps

Use a crossover cable between them & assign your xbox & your PC a static IP.

You can link directly to from your PC to your Xbox without a router. You need to use a static IP address on your Xbox because tyour will not get your DHCP without the router. Then use Flash FXP to transfer files to the Xbox IP address.

HINT/TRICK: If your are trying to use WinXP home to connect directly from your PC and Xbox and you cannot get static IP to work, set up internet connection sharing on your XP computer and it will give your Xbox a DHCP IP. This sometimes doesn't work on EVO so switch to Avalaunch and it seems to work everytime.
