I use the autodir tags to form my game list and I've noticed that some game titles have wierd characters (i.e. Red Faction[]) or sometimes is all caps (i.e. SOULCALIBUR2). I was wondering what file this title comes from and if it can be edited so that it displays the title the way I want them to look, all while still using the autodir tags.

the only way to fix them until the xbe renamer comes out is to use a MXM_Entry.xml file in the game directory.
Just copy/paste this in a text file and save it as MXM_Entry.xml Of course, you need to edit it to what you want. You can remove everything except the title and the exe tags. Those must be in there.
Once you have all that done, reset the menu cache (Y button) and reboot.

I just download XBE Renamer 0.8 from XS. Is this a safe app to use when it comes to renaming titles?

It worked for me (with SoulCalibur2, as it happens), but keep an unmodified version of the xbe just in case.
doubtful

You dont have to add anything mxm wise, just get xboxtoolkit and install, it has a xbe renamer feature.
