The 4:3 aspect ratio is what you are probably looking at on your current TV. It is the aspect ratio of a standard square TV. Normaly it is 4 by 3 for every 4 pixels across there are 3 pixels vertical. Not perfectly square but close.

16:9 is the typical aspect ratio of Widescreen TV's and monitors. It is what is used most in HDTV broadcast. It is also the aspect ratio that most movies are converted down to for distribution on DVD. Most motion pictures are shot in wider than 16:9 aspect ratios. Like 1.85:1 and 2.35:1. In comparison 16:9 would be roughly 1.78:1.

As for which looks better. 16:9 is going to look better for most things but it will depend on the source material and whether or not it was created for 16:9. A 4:3 image displayed on a 16:9 screen will do one of 3 things depending on the hardware or display. 1. Nothing at all. It will still be a square 4:3 image and there will be black all around the image which would be the unused area of the display. 2. It will stretch to fill the entire screen and have an unatural look as well as a lot of distorion especially on round objects. May also have tearing and other artifacting issues with the image being stretched. 3. Some displays can Up-Sample the 4:3 source and actually do a fairly decent job. Most of the time this is done by adding data to the immage to fill it out to fit the 16:9 display.

The other thing as well is that most of the time a 16:9 image will also have more lines of resolution than it's 4:3 countepart and thus have a more vibrant crisp look to it.

This is my first skin, I hope to make more. I used to use evox and mxm for a long time till a while back I decided to try the hacked dash. Boy am I glad i changed.

I LOVE this dash. So I decided to take a stab at a skin

Its still a WIP. I don't know what to do with the cellwall, whether to get rid of it or to change it to something else. And I'm still tweaking the colors to match right

Well here's some screenies.

I'd love feedback, or some info on what i should do to make it better.
If all goes well I should have it ready by Friday.

I must say that all you guys have very nice ms dashboards!!! My question is: How do you do to add a menu in ms dashboard? I play my game from evox dashboard now, but i want to play the game, apps, emu... from the ms dashboard... please help me!!! I have change the background on my ms dashboard but i also want to add som menu to.

Please help me!

Looks good, but the xbx folder in the rar file confuses me a little.

Should every xbx be inserted into default.xip ?, guess not.

Imho it would be even more intuitive if the *.xbx had a self explanatory folder structure like the *.xap files.

But then again, it's your skin. You da man.

your screenie gives me an idea... i'm gonna try to make it so that my dash will display a different screen for apps, games, emulators, and dashboards. Although i'm new to this, i think i posess the coding skillz to get this to work

i'll keep you guys posted if it works.

Here's what I've got so far with my black skin:) Got my SubMenu colors for apps n games working right again:)
But still have to find the CD Player (or SoundTrack)... it's still blue:) Other than that, have a dvd stop pic and a logo:) all bassed of that red hand!
DVDStop is my fav:) (edit: found the CD player... it's in message.xip as dvdpaneltext.xbx)

Blimey! Tons of activity in this thread over the last few days, eh? Props to glitch, badmotha and co for the new stuff.

I've done something a bit different with my latest skin:

1) My bottom menu option is now titled "FTP ACCESS", and selecting it goes straight to Evox.
2) The Evox it loads has only one menu option which returns you straight to the tHc dash. The menu has been made completely invisible so all you can see is the evox background and loading screen.
3) ... in other words, my MS Dash is as close as it currently gets to having an FTP server. Evox is fast enough to make it feel like just another menu screen.
