Prototype? It could just be a modified case, and a modified jewel. Do you have any proof that it is what it is. Do you have any boxes or manuals or anything like that.. And can you take a more detailed picture of what on the back.

i used to have a dev. kit case, but the jewel didn't look like that, what the hell is that? i doubt it's a prototype. lets see the stickers on the bottom that say it's authentic, and the property of MS.

lol that person must have alot of capital to put the kind of money in just to custom make a case and jewel to sell it for $400 ... i hear the mold to make plastic cases cost over $100,000 ...
also please tell me how you can modify Black plastic and turn it clear ?

Molds can be that expensive, or more, but for a case like the XBOX I would put a guestimate of about $30,000. Of course there are several components to be molded in the XBOX and the cost of each mold would be different depending on the complexity and part layout (coring, side actions, yadda yadda yadda). For these types of parts, prototypes would typically be cnc machined. That is to say, 3D models are CAD generated and used to create tool paths for a computer numerically controlled milling machine. The parts can then be polished, sandblasted, honed, etc to give the desired finish or clarity. The only thing that looks odd to me (as someone who has worked for a prototype shop that would make parts for companies like Lucent, GE, Bose and many others) is how the top appears to be made from a clear acrylic or polycarbonate and the base looks like a black ABS or ABS polycarbonate blend (guessing here). I believe it's a prototype, and
even if not the cost to buy an XBOX and CNC up a new top and different jewel would definitely be more than the $400 this guy is selling it for. It looks cool even if you look it it from the aspect of a unique mod that you can mount some funky lights in!
P.S. None of the companies that I recall doing work for ever asked us to make labels like someone in this thread asked. If we did make up graphics that were applied, they would always be as close to the final design as possible. Then again, I don't recall doing any work for M$!

Ok, so it doesn't have the real ports in the back. So it an incomplete Development Kit. Ah screw that, I want a real one that has all the features, it's practically a Debug Kit (just looks different). I guess I'll just keep waiting for another one of these rare pieces to pop up, a complete one I may add.

Well, I for one, know it is 100% legitimate. ArmyofONE is a legit seller, not to mention an Xbox-Scene SPONSOR.
This thread gets my official Seal of Approval

Hi, Im really interested in your auction. I have cash ready right now, however I am somewhat reluctant in the fact that in your auction you stated;

| These Xboxes were only given to developers before Xbox was released, so it is very RARE!!! Xbox is BRAND NEW in MINT condition and fully working!!!!!! If your a fan or a collector this is a must have. The Xbox was opened to show you the 128mb of ram. |
Then later in this post (just above me) you say something about Walmart. Is this the ORIGINAL PROTOTYPE HARDWARE? Or a fixed Xbox with a fancy case? Are the COM ports and USB ports intact?

To the poster who said who would want it in 10 years.. all you have to do.. is check the collectors circles.
Some people.. will give their left nut for WORKING consoles and computers well past their useful age.
Peolple WILL want this unit. People may even want normal STOCK XBOX units down the road as well.

from what i remember was the prototype not in the shape of an actual X, a metalic one at that.. I messed a friend at M$ and he said that no one there has any knowlage of that clear model claiming to be a prototype, not to say it is not one.. but no one he talked to has seen that one.. others in the company might have who knows... but i thought it was metalic ???

Thats not it, but it was metalic like that one... i dont know im a crack head,... just ignore me...

uh 2 different things from phase 1 retail prototypes and phase 2 dev kit prototypes , thi sis a phase 2 dev kit prototype. Not retail.
Phase 1- current design was a huge x
phase 2 -more boxy case with x molded into it
final design is based off phase 2.

According to my sources, this is a real prototype dev kit (well at least the casing is for sure), I can't vouch for the seller, but his feedback is flawless. So I would have no trouble with bidding on this unit. I'm giving it a good deal of bid consideration

All dev kits are prototype Xboxes.. According to my sources.
Anyway is it more of a beta-development kit as the prototype Xboxes where tower style PC kits.
ArmyofONE
Sep 8 2003, 01:17 PM
wrong tower units are pcs with sdk installed, as for all the dev kits being beta.development kits your sources are wrong my 2 xdks dont have prototype anywhere on them.

If anyone watched the Discovery Channel show on the Marketing of Xbox, you would have seen this case a few times with the Xbox game "testing" guys when they were testing games by software companies. I can't remember anything else about it other than a couple of the head guys carried them around.
I wanted the case from just seeing the show, screw what it does.
